Discovery and Polling

Discovery phase; a list of seed devices are used to start network device discovery. porttracker will extract information from seed devices in an attempt to locate other infrastructure devices. Information is then extracted from those infrastructure devices in an attempt to locate other infrastructure devices. This process is repeated in a recursive fashion until no other infrastructure devices can be found. After the discovery phase, network infrastructure devices are (optionally)automatically assigned to pollers.

Poll phase; the master appliance instructs pollers to poll their assigned devices for end device information. Optionally the pollers can be configured to ping address ranges to refresh ARP cache and bridge forwarding databases prior to the gathering of the data.
