Network Cable Tracing; about as much fun as paint drying!
Ok, so it’s your turn to sort out the spaghetti in the server room or to visit that remote office to find a new port. Now let’s be honest, it isn’t really all that much fun!
At porttracker we have come up with 10 great alternatives / excuses to get out of network cable tracing. So with no more ado we introduce our top ten alternatives / excuses to network cable tracing:
1 Ask the most junior team member to do it instead.
This is all great and very fair unless you are the junior member of the team. In this case do a really bad job, keep on calling the rest of the team for advice, or (much easier) download a free evaluation copy of porttracker.
2 Watch paint dry
Ummm. Actually we struggled with this a bit because watching paint dry paint can take some time. We recommend a minimum investment in a super powerful industrial heater.
3 Take 1st line support calls
Yes, I am sure that you would rather be taking calls and quoting “RTFM” to all the suits, but actually after a call from the office Dilbert.
4 Read www.theregister.co.uk
Biting the hand that feeds I.T. Always plenty of gossip and scandal available, all wrapped in corporate goodness.
5 Watching PRON ;-)
No explanation on this one, you either know or don’t.
6 Watch daytime TV
It’s amazing how many repeats of Top Gear there are these days and you can always guarantee you missed part of at least one of them.
7 Get a Dental / Doctor’s appointment
It’s nearly impossible to get one of these so when the chance comes we have to take it.
So as soon as the “network cable tracing” phrase is raised mention you are waiting for a call to confirm an emergency Doctor / Dental appointment. Get one of your mates to call your mobile and hope that by the time you come back somebody else has done it.
8 Go to lunch
Not suggesting that lunch is an excuse to not deal with work but those liquid lunches on a Friday are certainly a great winner.
9 Ask if anybody has bought porttracker yet
If they have then excellent; you will already have removed one of the painful jobs from your list. If not have a look at http://www.porttracker.com/10-reasons.html to support your business case or see point 10.
10 Download a free evaluation copy of porttracker
Yes, we are selling out and plugging our product! At the end of the day that’s what puts food on the table and beer in our glasses.
